The Battle of Bourtange is an annual event. This year is very special. For it is the 25th edition of the battle. The fortress will be completely adapted to the era of the 80-year war during these days. The faithfully reconstructed fortifications will be the decor of a first-class historical spectacle.
In 1640 the Spanish troops took the fortress, but the Dutch intend to retake it.
You can see firsthand whether they succeed: numerous soldiers from earlier centuries will try to re-enact the story as truthfully as possible. In addition to spectacular field battles around the fortress, you can also take a look at daily life at that time. Visit an original warehouse, admire the spectacles and fights, or stroll through a market from bygone times. Experience the atmosphere of the 17th century in the Bourtange fortress.
As early as Friday, May 31st, soldiers from the 80 Years War will be marching in and around the Bourtange fortress. The official opening is on Saturday, June 1st at 10 a.m. All kinds of activities take place in the fortress from 11 a.m. and the bivouacs are open to the public.
